Step 5 - Visit DPS
When the student is eligible for a Driver
License, you must first schedule a driving test
date. For many locations this can be done on
the DPS website. Do this well in advance. We
will tell you everything you need to bring.
Lastly, pass the driving test to earn a License!
After obtaining the Learner License, you will complete the remaining 26 classroom and 44
driving hrs. For the driving, we tell you exactly
what to do in the vehicle for each activity.
Once you complete all required hours, you
are emailed a 2nd official Certificate of
Completion to use for the Driver License.
(block method will only have driving lessons left)

The Parent Taught Program Guide must be requested by registering and paying the $20 fee online (linked in Step 1 below) or by printing the DL-92 form (linked
below) & mailing it with the fee. There is an option on the form to have the guide emailed to you if you prefer. The PTDE Program Guide will contain instructions
and forms used in the course. But don't worry, we guide you the entire way and even provide form samples so that you always fill them out correctly!

Registration for our required Online Parent Taught Driver Ed course is quick and easy. Fill out the registration form linked below, make your one-time payment
and have instant access! This one fee will have everything you need for the Learner License (permit) and Driver License; both classroom and driving portions.

2

The instructor & student will complete the first six hours of classroom lessons. (32 hours for block method students) Then, the student will complete several
permit practice quizzes to help them get ready for the Learner License Exam. You have unlimited use of the practice quizzes and our awesome lessons.

When the student is ready, they will take the Official Learner License Exam on our website. If they fail, they can take it again in 24 hours. No exam fees!

Once the Learner License Exam is passed, you will request and receive an emailed printable certificate. We will also give you a list of all the forms to bring
with you to the DPS of your choice. Our form helper will assist you in filling out the State forms. (the DPS will charge a $16 fee for the Learner License)

3

Once you have the official Texas State PTDE certificate from us (DE-964) and have all of the forms we specify, you can
visit the DPS location of your choice. The certificate will have the exam score printed. The student will complete a brief
vision test before taking a photo and receiving their temporary Learner License. (paper) The official plastic Learner
License will come in the mail a few weeks later. Don't forget that the Texas DPS charges a $16 fee for the Learner License.

4

Once the student has earned their Learner License you can begin the driving lessons concurrently with the remaining 26 classroom hours. For the driving portion
we tell you in detail exactly what to do in the vehicle for each activity. You will even have an optional driving outline to bring with you in the vehicle.

When finished, you will request the Driver License certificate. (emailed fast!) Print the emailed certificate and gather the forms we specify for you. Starting
Sept. 1st 2015, the Texas DPS requires all students in the State to watch a 2 hr video on their Impact Texas Teen Drivers website and receive their
certificate. It is required to have for a Driver License, and must be completed no sooner than 90 days from the driving test. Schedule your driving test first.

5

Now that you are finished with the course, there are a few things you will need to get ready before receiving the license. The Texas DPS requires all teens
to watch a 2 hr video about driving distractions on their Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) website. The site will be linked in the course, with reminders.
Register for free on the DPS website, watch the video, and receive a certificate of completion. But schedule your driving test first! Many locations allow you
to do this online. Do this first because the ITTD video must be completed within 90 days of the test; no sooner. We will give you a list of items to bring to the
DPS for the Driver License. And if you have questions at any point you can call us and talk to the best online driver ed support. We can't wait to help you!
